Highland Fling Dressage Cup donated by Sylvia Hart
(report as at Feb 1995)

At the Dressage at Larkhill we see the presentation of the Highland Fling Cup. Fling, as he is affectionately known, is now 34 years old and semi retired. He had an active life as a riding club representative, under the capable hands of Lindsay Hills, our chairman, and Sylvia Hart his owner, representing the club every year between 1969 and 1978 in dressage and Prix Caprilli, as well as partaking in all other club activities during this period.
ln 1969, he qualified as an individual at the Area Dressage in Brockenhurst, judged by Jennie Loriston-Clarke, and proceeded to the National Championship, as the first ever BVRC representative.
In 1978, aged 17 years, he was ridden by Sue Hassell and placed first in his arena at the Area Dressage. With his stable companion Summertime Jesta, ridden by Lindsay, qualified in the Pairs Dressage and they finished second at the National Championships.
He has recently been honoured by the R.D.A. having been presented with a long service medal, this is to commemorate 21 years of service to the R.D.A.
Obviously, a career such as this deserves to be remembered in some way, and the presentation of a cup in his name must certainly give pride to all who are concerned with him.

Florin Shield donated by Gilly Facer

(An explanation of the Florin by Gilly Facer)
When I first met Florin, he was a handsome two year old, a blue roan with silver mane and tail. As time went by we grew together and I discovered not only a great friend but a willing jumper. We also found that he disliked men in white coats – vets – and had a very sweet tooth for ice cream and mars bars! We eventually competed at Dressage, show jumping and enjoyed the occasional days hunting. Now that was right up his street, safe, willing and sensible with bottomless stamina. He was schoolmaster to horse and human alike, but would give the more experienced a great ride. At one stage Dave Packman and I shared Florin. David enjoyed hunting with him and had some great days. Later he and David became a familiar sight along the bridleways and at the local hostelries. It was not unknown to see Florin mooching home on a long rein – Dave safely snoozing up top! Florin spent a happy retirement with his two young friends at our Romsey home. He lived for 26happy years. It was his love of jumping that gave me the idea for the Florin Cup in his memory. I nearly forgot, he also represented the club on the Prix Caprilli team at Stoneleigh (RC Championships). David exercised him on the racecourse. Florin thought the fences were just right for him – not so David.

David Packman Memorial Trophy (by Sam Hart May 1995)

David Packman was a founder member of the Club which had its first meeting at a pub in Vemham Dean nearly thirty years ago. Dave had 20 acres of wood and grassland at Locks Drove, Upton and this was the venue of many of our early activities. Here we ran gymkhanas for grown ups, hunter trials over the many fences he had built, stable management in the stables and riotous barbecues in one of his barns. He was very proud when our team competed at Hickstead in a Riding Club Show Jumping competition, especially as the blue saddle cloth with a white logo BV showed up so brilliantly on black and white television. Many anecdotes have been told about him and he set the tone of the club by his sense of fun. This was epitomised when he arranged for the mourners to sing ‘Nellie Dee’ at his funeral.

This trophy is to be awarded to the best BVRC member competing in the Novice One Day Event competition.

Doorsteps Trophy – Open Horse Trials donated by ‘Doorsteps Catering’, Dee & Albert Saunders

We were about to run a competition at Larkhill and the caterer had let us down. After a pre-competition site check, I remembered I had been given a catering recommendation. Contact details were somewhat vague, the instruction was a van in a layby in Savernake Forest on the A4 between Marlborough & Hungerford. Thinking that I was mad but knowing I was also desperate, off I set into the unknown. I duly found the aforementioned van, Doorsteps Catering, and Albert Saunders.
The trip was well worth it and the description proved accurate. It was a new business, an immaculate van and fantastic food and they were available!
Doorsteps provided catering to BVRC for many years with Albert’s cooking & Dee’s fantastic cakes.
They, in turn, were so grateful for BVRC support that they donated the magnificent trophy.                          LKH.
